Do I need to memorize case interview frameworks?
No. Relying on memorized frameworks is actually a common way to fail a case. Interviewers give you problems that don't fit a textbook framework exactly, and reciting one anyway is easy to spot. What works is knowing how to structure a problem from scratch, using MECE thinking, so you can build the right tree for whatever's in front of you.
What is MECE?
MECE stands for Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive: a way of splitting a problem into parts that don't overlap and don't leave anything out. It's the core discipline behind every well-structured issue tree, and the standard consultants at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain use to judge how you think.
What's the difference between a framework and an issue tree?
A framework (like 'profitability = revenue − cost') is a starting shape. An issue tree is what you build when you take that starting shape and break it down, branch by branch, into the specific questions that answer your case. Frameworks give you a first branch; building the tree is the actual skill being tested.
