Market Entry Framework for Case Interviews

A market entry case asks whether — and how — a company should enter a new market. The framework splits into three questions that, together, cover the whole decision.

The base structure

  • Is the market attractive?
    • Market size and growth rate
    • Profitability and competitive intensity
    • Regulatory or structural barriers
  • Can the company win here?
    • Relevant capabilities and assets it already has
    • Brand fit and existing customer relationships
    • Resources available to invest
  • How should it enter?
    • Build organically
    • Acquire an existing player
    • Partner or joint venture

Each top-level question is MECE with the others: attractiveness is about the market itself, capability is about the company, entry mode is about the mechanism — three distinct angles that together answer the full decision.

Why all three matter

A market can be attractive but a poor fit for the company's capabilities. A company can be well-suited to a market but choose the wrong entry mode and fail anyway. Answering only one of the three questions leaves a real gap — this is a common trap where candidates dive straight into market size and skip capability and entry mode entirely.

A worked example

Case: A domestic beverage company is considering entering the sports drink category. Should it?

  • Attractive? Category growing 8% annually, but dominated by two strong incumbents with high marketing spend.
  • Can it win? Existing distribution network overlaps heavily with likely retail channels — a real advantage. Brand isn't currently associated with sports/performance, though.
  • How to enter? Given the brand gap, acquiring a smaller existing sports drink brand may beat building a new one from scratch.

Note how the entry-mode recommendation depends directly on the capability analysis — the three branches connect, not just sit side by side.

Practice adapting this to unfamiliar industries

The generic structure above is a starting point — adapting the specific sub-branches to the industry in front of you (regulatory questions matter far more for entering healthcare than entering snack foods, for instance) is the actual skill. FAQ

What are the main branches of a market entry framework?

Market attractiveness (is this market worth entering), company capability (can we win here), and entry mode (how should we enter). Three MECE questions that together answer whether and how to enter.

What's the difference between market entry and market sizing questions?

Market sizing estimates how big a market is; market entry asks whether a specific company should enter it and how. Sizing is often one input into an entry decision, not the whole question.
